On the Ground in Bosnia: Building Partnerships for Circular Progress

This post is part of my ongoing series documenting CETAP’s journey to help Bosnia and Herzegovina transition toward a circular economy.

April 2025 was one of the most energising months so far. Together with our Deputy Team Leader Dr Ion Musetoiu, I spent two weeks on the road across Bosnia and Herzegovina, meeting dozens of stakeholders working at the intersection of waste management, policy, and private sector innovation.

These meetings were central to our baseline assessment under Activity 1.1 — mapping Bosnia’s readiness to shift from a linear to a circular economy. In Sarajevo, we met representatives from UNDP, Canton Sarajevo’s Environmental Protection Sector, MIBRAL Construction, Euro Asfalt, APOSO, and ENOVA Consulting, among others. Each offered invaluable perspectives on practical barriers and opportunities for improvement.

I also had the chance to catch up with steering-committee colleagues from the Federal Ministry of Environment and Tourism and the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations, plus new partners from the Agency for Statistics of BiH and Heidelberg Materials in Kakanj. Ion headed south to Mostar to meet with the Cantonal Waste Management Department while I wrapped up with an online discussion with the World Bank team.

Every meeting reinforced the same point: collaboration is the cornerstone of progress. I’m deeply grateful to everyone who gave their time and insight. These exchanges will directly shape CETAP’s ongoing analysis and help us design solutions that genuinely fit Bosnia and Herzegovina’s needs.
